Facing History and Ourselves

Race and Membership

Program Overview : Section Overview - Race and Membership

In the first section of the module students explore how people often see human differences in terms of moral, intellectual, or aesthetic worth. Students are asked to consider questions such as:
  • What does it mean to be ‘normal’?
  • Why has ‘race’ mattered so much in the history of this country?
  • How has science been used to justify social, legal, and economic inequalities?
The activities in this section allow students to learn more about how powerful myths about human differences have shaped our thinking and behavior toward people today and in the past.
